How to build your new country!
With how the current political scenario is unfolding across the globe, you probably are wanting to start your own country. For a piece of land to be declared as a country, it needs to be recognized by the global union. The number of countries in the world ranges from 196–25, because not all contries are recognized by all countries.
But there are still some basic checks you need to complete before hoping to gain recognition by the world.
Acquiring land
I know, your backyard being declared as a country did sound appealing but, it can’t happen. You need to acquire a piece of land. You can try stealing land from your own country but, I’ll pass with the assumption that you’re not a cult leader.
An easier alternative would be to claim an unclaimed piece of land. There are several small islands in the south pacific ocean waiting to be claimed, although good luck getting there. If not an island, maybe you’ll like a desert. Bir Tawil is an area of 2000sqkm between Sudan & Egypt unclaimed by either country.
Liberland, a micronation was formed by Czech libertarian politician and activist Vít Jedlička by claiming an unclaimed piece of land between Croatia and Serbia, in 2015.
Forming a government
You can choose to govern your country however you want. You can either hold up global democratic values or establish hereditary monarchy but, whatever you chose, you need a national cohesive government. Your government should provide basic needs to their people, or NOT! But to be internationally recognized you must have an apparatus to interact with other foreign powers, a secretary of state. To fulfill this obligation you might even nominate your dog for this post, that’ll do.
Joining the UN
Write a letter to António Guterres, Secretary-General, The United Nations, and request membership….yes, that’s all.
Now, your application must be referred by the security council to the general assembly, where it must win a two-thirds majority who all think that you will carry out the duties of the UN charter which states:
- You’ll preserve the rule of law.
- Support human rights
- Maintain global peace
Even if you don’t gain UN recognition, you can still call yourself a nation, just like a dozen other countries.
Now that you have already wasted a couple of minutes learning this “critical” information, do you know what would have saved these minutes? A good plan for the day!
